The 2006 Winter Games are being held in Italy. But ask where in Italy and you have a 50-50 chance on what answer you'll get. It's a bit like the old t?-ma'to versus t?-mä'to argument. Americans refer to the host city as "Turin" while Italians call it "Torino."

No matter what name you use, the 2006 Winter Games promise to be quite spectacular. Approximately 2,500 athletes will participate in seven different sports and 15 different disciplines. The events will take place in eight separate competitions sites under the watchful eyes of 650 judges and umpires. Three Olympic villages will house the participants. And seven media villages will be created to accommodate approximately 10,000 journalists from around the world. Officials anticipate as many as one million spectators to attend the Games. This in-person audience will be joined via television broadcast by an additional (estimated) 2.5 billion viewers.

And, for those of you looking to the future, wondering where the Winter Games will be in 2010 - currently, they're scheduled for Vancouver Canada.

Now, let's take a look at some highlights from each Winter Olympics.
