In any big-budget movie that you see today, chances are at least part of it is "computer generated," or CG. It could be that some of the scenery is CG, or one of the characters is CG, or various machines are CG or everything you see is CG. In a lot of cases, CG stuff is so true to life that there is almost no way to tell what's "real" and what isn't.
CG characters are particularly fascinating because they let filmmakers create both normal people and weird aliens that look totally realistic. For example, Yoda in the latest Star Wars films is CG. So is Dobby in the second Harry Potter film.
So is the new incarnation of Scooby Doo. Animators can create almost any being you can imagine using CG technology.
Gollum from "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy is the most famous CG character to date, and he's also the most detailed and realistic.
So how did the filmmakers get this amazing character on screen? Let's take a look at the basic process.
